What Do You Get With an Online Personal Training Program?
Online personal training varies depending on the website you choose, but you typically get:
- Personalized workouts based on goals, schedule and available equipment
- Guidance on nutrition and diet
- Database of exercises that include video and picture demonstrations
- Fitness tools such as heart rate, calorie and other calculators
- Calendars that plan out your weekly workouts

The PROS
- Flexibility. You don't have an appointment you must keep--when you workout is up to you.
- It's cheaper. Personal trainers cost anywhere from $35 to $200 an hour, depending on where you live, plus there may be a gym membership involved. Online training almost always costs less.
- Accessibility. Your workouts are kept online so you can access them wherever you are (as long as you have a computer). This is great if you travel regularly.
- Print and go. You can also print out your workouts, your calendar, and workout log and bring them to the gym with you.
- For the Loners. You dont want to physically workout with a trainer, but you still want some kind of guidance, online training may be the answer.
- Learn something new. Many times even the most experienced can learn some new lifting techniques, new drills, or new training strategies.
The CONS:
- Need lots of self-discipline. There's no one to push you into just one more rep...you gotta do it all on your own.
- No technique feedback. If you've never lifted weights, you may not know whether you're doing it right, even with pictures and video demos. If you're not comfortable lifting, hire a live personal trainer to teach you technique.
- Accountability. With online training, you usually have to fill in your results from the workout on a regular basis. With out the results to view, the online trainer has no way of judging progress or making alterations to your program.
- Motivation. A weekly appointment with a gym trainer adds motivation you may not get from online training. Will you really do your workouts just because you get an email reminding you to? Will weekly check-ins be enough?
The Bottom Line about Online Personal Training
Certainly online training is not for everyone, but for some, it is a great resource. Make sure you pick an online trainer who is certified through a recognized organization (NSCA, ACE, NASM, IDEA, NATA) and that they have fitness and health forms (PAR-Q) for you to fill out. As long as you dedicated to achieving a personal fitness goals, online personal training can work for you.
